Work out how to reachyour accommodation first

Pick a city you want to visit, book a place to stay and check the route from the airport or station. Leave your first day for arriving, getting a meal and exploring nearby. You can build the rest of the trip from there.

Before you leave, check these essentials

  • Your stay and arrival route

Save the address, check-in instructions and booking confirmation. Check how to reach it from the airport or station, including when the last service leaves.

  • Internet and battery

Choose roaming, an eSIM or a SIM that works with your phone. Save screenshots of your address and tickets, and pack a power bank.

  • Payments and documents

Bring a working payment card and some cash. For your first solo trip abroad, check passport, visa and entry requirements for your nationality. Save your insurance and reservation details.

  • Someone who knows your plans

Share your accommodation, travel dates and contact details with someone you trust. Save local emergency numbers and agree to check in after arriving.

Getting ready for Taiwan, Japan or Korea

Solo travel in Taiwan

Use Taiwan Railways to check trains between cities. Add YouBike if you want to cycle around town; check stations and rental steps before setting off. When planning a day, check distances between your stops and allow time for food and breaks.

Your first solo trip to Japan

Use Japan Travel by NAVITIME to check airport transfers, train connections and routes between cities. Save your accommodation address in Japanese. Google Translate can help with menus and signs when you arrive.

Your first solo trip to Korea

Set up NAVER Map and save your accommodation and places you want to visit. Use Papago for menus, signs and conversations with staff. VISITKOREA also lists apps for transport, payments and restaurant bookings.

Save your help-abroad contacts

Save your destination's emergency numbers before leaving the US. US citizens can find embassy and consular assistance through the State Department. If you hold another passport, check your own country's consular services.

Using Mibu on your trip

Turn your saved places into a trip

Find places in Mibu, save the ones that interest you and add them to each day's itinerary. Tell Mini how much time you have, what you want to eat and how far you feel like walking, then adjust the day together.

Ask a question when you get there

Can't find a shop's entrance, or want to talk about a place you just visited? Post in Plaza. Users within each other's range when you send the message receive it. If someone replies, you can keep chatting and translate messages.

Keep a record of the day

Save a favorite café or a small moment in your private notes. If you want to share a tip with the next visitor, leave it on that place's Travelers' Wall.

Common questions

Before your first solo trip abroad

How much should I plan for my first solo trip?

Start with your accommodation, essential transport and the places you most want to visit. Allow extra time on arrival and departure days. Adjust the days in between to your energy, the weather and what you find along the way.

Which travel apps should I use in Taiwan, Japan and Korea?

For Taiwan, check intercity trains on Taiwan Railways and add YouBike for city cycling. In Japan, use Japan Travel by NAVITIME for transit and Google Translate for menus. In Korea, use NAVER Map and Papago. Mibu helps you find places, plan your trip, talk to nearby travelers and keep notes.

Who receives a message I send in Plaza?

Users within each other's range at the time you send it receive the message. Replies depend on who is nearby then. For notes left at a particular place, open its Travelers' Wall.

What should I do in an emergency?

For an immediate threat to your safety, call the local police or ambulance service and give your location and what happened. Mibu's SOS can also send a help request to eligible recipients and Mibu support.
